On Our Radar...

A large part of what we do on a daily basis at The Beauty Loft Tallahassee is sifting through potiental brands. The brands must hit on several key elements that we require for it to be sold to you. After we decide that we like the brand, we then turn it over to you, the customer. Usually we will request samples of the products for you to become familiar with, and we like to receive feedback. Recently we were contacted by a new and upcoming brand which caught our attention and we have decided to share it with you. The Holy Mud Company is fairly new on the market, and quickly becoming well known for their authentic Dead Sea mud masks. With a lineup of five masks for different skin types and issues, no skin condition is spared. Choose one of these masks from "The Holy Land;" The Honey & Oat Mask for dry, dehydrated skin, The DMAE Mask for mature, sagging skin in need of a boost, The Vitamin C Ester Mask for uneven skin tone or texture, The Dead Dea Mus Mask for oily skin in need of a deep pore cleansing, and The Pumpkin Glycolic Mask for dull skin in need of radiance.

Stop by The Beauty Loft Tallahassee this summer for a sample and let us know what you think....your pores will thank you!

Huge Merger on the Horizon....

This is one of the biggest pieces of news to hit the beauty industry all year (see link below)...I feel like this can go in any direction. On one hand, one of my favorite things about Bare Escentuals is the fact that it hasn't gone "corporate," but on the other hand, I think that the only way to strengthen such a growing brand is to create a solid company structure, something that Shiseido has maintained successfully and proven. Without a doubt, it is a great growth opportunity for Bare Escentuals, especially since Shiseido pretty much owns the Asian market (well deserved, in my opinion.) I just hope that Bare Escentuals maintains its original business plan and doesn't fall into the trap of greed and over-growth because the fundamental reason for its amazing customer loyalty is its non-corporate image. The products themselves are great quality and original, yet this is one of those classic examples of buying into a story, and one that women relate to and trust. If Bare Escentuals loses that "personal touch," and sells its soul to generic ideas and less than stellar customer service, then all that will be left will be something as boring as supermarket brand butter. It will be a staple that most women will inevitably buy, but the experience will be bland, and the chances of her branching out to other products will be about as likely as going to Publix for butter and coming home with six packs of grade A truffle infused butter.

I am not quick to judge how this situation/merger will turn out because it could also be extremely successful for both companies and rewarding to the consumer. I also have a really good feeling about this because I personally have a lot of faith in Shiseido and its umbrella of brands. I love that Shiseido has been about to globalize and still maintain exclusivity and quality in its product lines. We are dealing with two very powerful creatures here that have the ability to take over the world...one lipstick at a time. I will be following this business deal and reporting on it regularly!

The Fragrance Gods Are Listening...

Running the risk of sounding like a completely oblivious person, I will admit something embarassing to you...I have broken two diffusers. In my experience, a diffuser is one of the worst things to smash or drop (I have done both.) But it's just a dangerous situation no matter what...I mean...I think about it; a hard to hold glass object in a tiled room (I usually keep them in the bathrooms) just seems like a bad idea to me. And unilike breaking a plate or cup, when you break a diffuser...you need to fumigate it house immediately. The scent that a diffuser holds is extremely potent and not meant to be doused around the house by the cup full. What may have started off as a seemingly good idea and a pleasant scent all of a sudden turns into a nauseating mess with millions of tiny shards of glass in and around areas where you frequently go barefoot. Needless to say, it has always remained a mystery to me, until now, why diffusers have to be glass. I suppose that my heartache has been worthwile in the end, because just this week I received a generous box of goodies from Modern Notes, the makers of gorgeously scented diffusers. The most exciting thing that I noticed about these new diffusers is that they are made of a very nice plastic material that looks identical to glass.

Go to their website and check out their yummy scent collection...your house will never smell the same- http://www.modernnotes.com/

Achy Breaky...Lips??

A couple of weeks ago we received a shipment of these newly packaged lip balms from Rosebud Salve Co at Beauty Loft Tallahassee. I, like the rest of the beauty obsessed world, became attached to the original formula a number of years ago. Since then, new flavors have been released and new formulations have been created. However fun and exciting the new salves are when they are first released, it seems like I am always reaching for the original for my lips (and cuticles on a particularily dry day.) And as much as I love the original formula, which has been popular for over a century...the packaging is just not designed for a warm climate. If you live in Florida and you have ever left one of these in the car on a summer day, you know exactly what I am talking about! When we need to make orders for Beauty Loft in the summetime, we actually hygenically open each one before we put it on the shelves to ensure its freshness! So you can image my excitement when these tubes of the famous salve arrived! I immediately placed them on the front desk where you check out, next to our eternally burning NARS candle (there is just something about the Bosphurus scent that I can't get enough of.)
Immediately after placing them on my counter, customers recognized the pure genius of the new product. Slowly they began to disappear...and I started to get increasingly worried. With only three remaining, I knew I needed to act quickly. Even though I had been fighting the inner voice that told me that "one more gloss would be the straw on the horse's back," I couldn't sell out without snagging one for myself. I was able to justify the taken item, of course...I mean, it is winter, my lips are very dry and chapped and the packaging simply couldn't ruin my car seats.

Feeling very pleased with myself, I carried it around for at least a day. Yes...you heard right...ONE DAY! I seem to have left it in my boyfriends new car on its first outing...and haven't seen it since. He seemed to have noticed that not only does it moisturize without leaving a trace of girly color but it feels and smells great. My adventure with the new Rosebud Salve was short lived but very promising, i believe, because now he has very soft lips! And I think I might just need to snag another one...but don't tell....

Some magic from Urban Decay...

According to WWD, "Urban Decay Cosmetics has gone down the rabbit hole with “Alice in Wonderland” so consumers can get inspired by the upcoming movie when they peer into the looking glass."

As if a remake of the classic movie wasn't enough....now add Johnny Depp to the equation with a
fab new palette from Urban Decay...it's almost unbearably exciting!! We received this palette, pre-Alice-fied and it was an instant best seller for the holidays this year. Here is the descriptions courtesy of WWD:

"Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows products, is covered in a pattern with teapots and cups, and opens to reveal a pop-up drawing of Alice, recently shrunken by the “drink me” bottle contents, in the mushroom forest. Inside, there are 16 shadows with “Alice in Wonderland”-related names, such as a bright blue called Alice, and a white shade called White Rabbit, as well as two travel-size 24/7 Eye Pencils and one 0.13-oz. Eyeshadow Primer Potion. "

Hermes on the beach?

Let me start off by saying that I am all for throwaway elegance and casual luxury (you know, $200 Louis Vuitton pens and Chanel beach towels.) There is just something so luxurious and frivolous about these seemingly unimportant yet insanely expensive items. However, having said that, I simply must draw the line. Remember when Marc Jacobs was designing a line of condoms? I mean...come on...there has to be a limit to product placement in a porno.

So having said that...I am really apalled at how casually stars are treating their stuff these days. I have had not one, but two sightings of gorgeous Hermes bags at the beach practically in the ocean! I won't even bring a grilled cheese sandwich to the beach in fear of getting sand in it. Maybe Hermes needs to fill these obvious gap and just create a waterfproof bag already! With Hermes underwater camera included...

Sugar Rush! oh, I mean, Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween ghouls and goblins! Are you in the Halloween spirit today or do you not feel the spookiness until the sun goes down? Either way, today is a day to honor the seasons changing and to remember the dead among us. However you decide to celebrate the Witch's New Year, sugar is usually involved. I took this recipe from fellow blogger "The Recipe Girl" because it's simple, creative, and a perfect way to get rid of any candy and treats that you'll have left over after tonight. Personally, I would use dark or milk chocolate instead of white, but other than that, you can throw anything you're craving into this...So be safe tonight and maybe this year try to remember what this holiday is based upon, because it's so easy to get caught up in the festivities and we forget the rich history of today!

Candy Corn Cookie Bark
Makes 2 dozen pieces

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup Oreos broken into bits
1 cup Pretzels broken into bits
1 cup Candy Corn
Other candy like Resses, Butterfinger, M&M's, etc
1 pound Melting Chocolate (white or milk)
1 tsp shortening
Sprinkles

Step one- lay ingredients on cookie sheet or baking pan over parchment paper:

Step Two- Melt chocolate pieces and shortening (about 1 1/2 min) until they're liquid (keep stirring and microwave an extra 30 sec until smooth) and pour over bits of treats. Add any extra candy on top for crunch:

Step Three- Place in refrigerator or freezer until firm. Break into pieces with sharp knife and serve!

Cookie Review!

What's better than something tasting delicious and actually being really good for you? It's a rare combination, but when somebody gets it right...it's a keeper! I've been searching for a healthy snack to keep on hand at The Beauty Loft that customers would enjoy eating with their complimentary Caudalie Tea, and also something that they would consider buying. I had heard great things about the Goji Gourmet, the creators of all natural Goji cookies. The cookies are all natural, preserative free, high in antioxidants, hand made, have no refined sugars, and really do taste yummy. The flavors available are: Goji Almond Oat, Goji Cherry Cacao, Goji Ginger Walnut, and Goji Orange Mint Chip. All of the petite cookies are jam packed with organic goji berries (which we should all be familiar with by now. If you know anything about antioxidants, they are pretty much the smallest and most delicious cancer and free radical fighting berry around.)

After trying all of the flavors last week, (Goji Almond Oat is definitely my favorite, the spicy Goji Ginger Walnut coming in second) I could easily see myself becoming addicted to these as a great mid afternoon sugar free snack to curn even more dangerous cravings.

If these cookies are something that you would like to see at The Beauty Loft and something that you would like to add to your beautiful skin diet...send us an email or leave us a comment. Yum!

I hate to say it but...duh

It's always more than a little frustraing to me when I read about things that are so completely obvious that it's almost silly. But then I realize (or better yet, somebody nevee hesistates to tell me) that I am stuck inside of this gorgeous, pink, candy scented, beauty product filled bubble with an unpenetratable shell. What seems obvious to me within the beauty industry is actually sometimes news for the rest of the world. Such is the case with Faye Brookman's article in WWD this week entitled "Baby Beauty Products Appear Popular Among Adults."

For three years I've been selling baby care line Mustela at The Beauty Loft, and for about that same amount of time, we have been using the Mustela Baby Wipes For Face as makeup remover. Our philosophy is this; if it's gentle enough for your baby/newborn, then it's sure gentle enough for even the most sensitive customer, whatever the age. According to WWD, 40% of adults (both men and women) currently use baby products on themselves.

WWD also makes a point in the article that I disagree with; they state that one of the main reasons why consumers are purchasing baby items is because of the cost.

"I think consumers continue to be careful with their spending. The Johnson’s/Harris Poll showed that 71 percent of adults indicated they would be more likely to use baby products if they were less expensive than the adult equivalent,” she said.

In my experience, customers are not buying the baby items because of the cost. They are buying them because they are extra gentle, or they got hooked after using them on their own children. According to the cheaper price logic, my customer who buys the Mustela Baby Wipes is buying them because they are under $10. Totally untrue. For less than that, they can go to their local drugstore and buy Neutrogena or Almay Makeup Remover Wipes, but it's a conscious choice that they are making. I think a more interesting choice for an article would be why after a product is geared for a certain age, we start adding harmful chemicals. At what age does a company dedide...ok, it's time? Ok, I'm off my soapbox now!

Keep checking back because in the next couple of days I will be reviewing some fantastic, new, organic products!
